What is FONT?
FONT is a Manchester-based pub SF group that grew out of (but now has little connection with) WARPED, the SF/Fantasy society at Manchester University.
Meetings are held on the second, fourth and (when there is one) fifth Thursdays of each month, at the Crown and Anchor pub on the junction of Hilton Street/Port Street, in central Manchester. The first arrivals may be there as early as 7:30, but things don't really get going until about 8:30-9:00.
What do we do at meetings? Everyone always asks that, with a suspicious look in their eye, obviously afraid that they'll have to undergo some terrifying ordeal.
Well, we sit in the pub. And chat. And drink a bit. That's about it really. The only arcane ritual is reserved for those who perpetrate (for that is the word) unspeakable puns within earshot. Though you'd have to be going some to out-do the Don-Hubbard double act in this department, and we've been sorely lacking quality headgear in recent years.
Getting There
The pub is on the junction of Port Street and Hilton Street, just south-east of Stevenson Square. If I've done things right, that should be bang in the middle of this map.
There is usually plenty of space to to park on the street right outside the pub. For those on public transport, the nearest metrolink stop is Piccadilly Gardens, which is also the main hub for many bus services. Piccadilly Railway station is also conveniently close.
